FLOurishing in the healthcare Workforce

FLOW

Scaling evidence-based workplace solutions by creating flourishing models for all clinicians, addressing inequities and helping everyone thrive in a rapidly changing workplace. Psychometric and biometrics measured with wearable devices are used to address the impact of adverse work conditions.

The Challenge

Burnout arises from adverse work conditions, including time pressure, lack of work control, and unsupportive organizational cultures. Flourishing as a goal for the healthcare workforce has neither been studied nor accomplished, with several groups leaving the workforce

Our Solution

Psychometrics and biometrics (wearable devices) will be used in 60-100 HCWs per site (women, men, MDs, APPs, RNs, primary care, ICU workers and research teams) to address impact of adverse work conditions. Ten institutional site leaders (e.g. division directors, department chairs, medical directors) will form a national Learning Community (LC) for scaling up solutions to promote flourishing in healthcare. The LC will meet regularly with national organizational partners (e.g. Kern National Network for Caring and Character, AMWA and IHI) to oversee institutional solutions. Units where work will occur will largely be divisions or departments in large academic centers, scaling up findings within organizations and then nationally.
